Bios for Panelists presenting the "Post September 11: Responding to the Crisis" Panel Discussion

Jesse Harris, PhD., B.C.D. )(Col. Ret.US Army)- Dean of School of Social Work At the University of Maryland- Baltimore. BA from Morgan State University, and PhD from University of Maryland School of Social Work. He is the past president of the Baltimore Mental Health Systems. He also spent six months in Egypt with the Peace-Keeping Mission during the Gulf War. Dr. Harris will be discussing how we need to understand some of the mental health implications of the September 11th tragedy.


Swaran Dhawan, LCSW-C - Director of Social Work at Taylor Manor Hospital and has her own private practice. She is currently an assistant professor at Smith College and University of Maryland's Schools of Social Work. Mrs. Dhawan is an Asian Indian Social Worker who has been practicing in the United States of America for over thirty years. She is currently on the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Crisis Response Team.
Mrs. Dhawan is board member of the Maryland Health Partner's Committee on Diversity and Cultural Affairs. Mrs. Dhawan will address how to respond to individuals in crisis. She will also share perspectives from the South Asian Community in response to discrimination and prejudices against the community.


Imam ElKadi-LCSW-C
- Therapist at the Multicultural Resource Center in Falls Church ,VA. She is also a counselor with the Islamic Social Services. Her specialization in her clinical practice is with trauma victims. Mrs. ElKadi will share experiences from Muslim clients who have also been coping with grief and trauma since the September 11 attacks. She will share insight for mental health professionals who maybe working with Muslims since the attacks.

Directions

From the North: Take Interstate 95 to Route 166 (Exit 47B, Catonsville) or take Interstate 83 to the Baltimore Beltway (I-695, west) and then take Exit 12C (Wilkens Avenue, west); follow the signs to UMBC.

From the South: Take Interstate 95 to Route 166 (Exit 47B, Catonsville); follow signs to UMBC.

Public Transporation: Bus service is available from downtown Baltimore. AMTRAK and MARC commuter trains serve the nearby BWI Rail Station.

Visitor parking : Available at metered areas located at Upper Lot 10 on Administration Drive and Garage 1 off Library Drive and Walker Avenue. Meters are enforced Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Except for meters, all other campus roadways and lots require a permit.
